The Ann Arbor Society for Musical Arts is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that hosts six concerts and sponsors two youth competitions every year.


2024 Rosalie Edwards Youth Music Competition

Our annual youth music competition is open to middle- and high-school musicians, ages 13-18 (strings, winds, brass, piano and vocalists) who reside in Washtenaw County. The competition is professionally judged and winners receive cash prizes. The winners’ recital will be held on Wednesday, March 6.

Congratulations to all who participated! This year’s winners are:

First Place: Yuma Tsubouchi, piano (Dexter High School, age 17)

Second Place (tie): Yohei Kuroda, violin (Saline High School, age 15) & Luke Mourad, piano (Chelsea High School, age 16)

Third Place (tie): Violet Weizer, cello (Green Hills High School, age 16) & Jiaqi Huang, piano (Huron High School, age 15)


2023–24 Concert Series — Wednesday Morning Musicales

Since 1964 SMA has sponsored the Wednesday Morning Musicales together with the Ann Arbor City Club. We are thrilled to announce our 2023-24 season, and we hope you can join us!

Make a gift to the Penelope Fischer Young Artist Competition Fund

For more than 30 years Penny has been an active member of the Ann Arbor Society for Musical Arts (S.M.A.) whose morning concert series at the Ann Arbor City Club has generated funds that enable young people in our community to pursue their music studies. Contributions to this fund will enable S.M.A. to continue offering financial awards to winners of the annual competition to musically talented college- and university-aged students up to the age of 34 years who study or reside in Ann Arbor or Ypsilanti. Join the “88 Key Club”

piano-keyboard-clipart2We are raising money toward a brand-new Yamaha grand piano to be housed and available for use at the Ann Arbor City Club. This piano has been tested and gets an “excellent” rating from William Bolcom and members of the UM piano faculty. It is being funded by the SMA and individual donations. Please consider joining the “88 Key Club” by making a tax-deductible donation toward the purchase of this beautiful instrument. There are 88 keys at $265 each.
